Marketplace Now Open In 13 New Countries
Author: Admin Posted on: 28.03.2012 at 17:00 PST

Microsoft today has announced that they’re opening 13 new storefronts around the world for Windows Phone apps and games.

The new Marketplaces are Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Croatia, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

Throw in the ones Microsft launched earlier this year in Argentina, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru, and the Philippines, and it brings the total number of Marketplace storefronts to 54.

Microsoft at Mobile World Congress this year announced that they will be opening stores in UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Israel, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Also Nokia today has announced the Nokia Lumia 800C is coming to China Telecom. In less than three months, Microsoft added 20,000 apps and 15,000 registered developers to Microsoft new China Marketplace.

What happens if you’ve already set up your phone to download apps from a Marketplace elsewhere? You can still reconfigure your phone to use your new local Marketplace.

But changing Marketplace locations requires you to reset your phone, which returns it to its factory settings and erases things like apps, contacts, pictures and other information stored on the device.

So you’ll want to keep that in mind, and make sure you’ve first saved what you can to the cloud (SkyDrive) or to your PC using the Zune software.

AT&T To Update Current Windows Phones With Tango
Author: Admin Posted on: 28.03.2012 at 13:00 PST

AT&T caught a lot of criticism over the weekend regarding their comment about not support the 8107 OS update for their current Windows Phone lineup:

I got some news about the Windows Phone 8107 update and wanted to share it with you all. We are not currently planning to offer the Windows 8107 update. I don’t have any additional information right now. If and when I get details, I will update the thread.

The 8107 OS update is critical for few security fixes and also fixing disappearing keyboard bug for some people.

WPCentral just spoke with AT&T on the situation and they confirmed that it is true that AT&T have passed on 8107 or what they referred to as CR1 (Windows Phone Mango Commercial Refresh 1).

AT&T also passed on CR2, which is what the Lumia 900 and Titan II are running (Windows Phone build 8112).

That update brings LTE and Visual Voicemail support for AT&T and as you know obviously LTE update is pointless for current Mango phones.

The good news is they have not shut the door on OS updates for their current lineup including the HTC Titan, Samsung Focus S, and Focus Flash.

Stacey Harth, a spokeswoman for AT&T, just told WPCentral this morning (with no commitment to a time-frame):

AT&T plans for a Windows Phone update that will contain the improvements in the 8107 update and more.

So for current Windows Phone generations this means ‘Tango’ update, which goes by the alternate name CR3 and you can hope that the ‘Tango’ update will be ready for your AT&T handsets in near future.

PCMag’s Readers’ Choice Awards: Windows Phone
Author: Admin Posted on: 28.03.2012 at 12:00 PST

In the ongoing battle for mobile OS supremacy Android may be winning the popularity contest right now but Microsoft and Apple wins when it comes to customer satisfaction and by a wide margin.

Android’s popularity doesn’t translate directly into being as well liked, thus Microsoft and Apple share the 2012 Readers’ Choice Award for smartphone platforms, or mobile OSes.

When PC Magazine asked their readers how satisfied they were with their smartphones overall, Microsoft and Apple customers both rated their phones an impressive 8.7 on their 0 (extremely dissatisfied) to 10 (extremely satisfied) scale.

Android, on the other hand, only received a 7.9, the same rating it received in 2011.

Windows Phone, which earned an Honorable Mention in 2011, improved 0.6 points.

That’s up from an 8.1, which is a big jump in satisfaction.

While Microsoft and Apple rated the same for overall satisfaction, Windows Phone actually received slightly higher satisfaction ratings than iOS in several key areas, including reliability, text messaging, Web browsing, and gaming.

Substantially more Android users also reported needing technical support with their phones (32 percent) compared to iOS (25 percent) and Windows Phone (20 percent) users.

Last year’s top performers on AT&T—Samsung’s Windows Phone-based smartphones and Apple’s iPhone—once again win PC Magazine Readers’ Choice Award.

Samsung received a very impressive overall satisfaction rating of 9.0, up from 8.7 in 2011.

The Samsung phones once again receive the highest overall reliability scores (9.1), and they also rated best in several other areas, including call coverage (lest we forget that our smartphones can be used for actual phone calls, too).

The iPhone doesn’t stand out as a phone on AT&T’s network. In fact, it had the lowest rating for coverage outside the home area.

Verizon Wireless received responses for the widest selection of smartphones in this year’s survey, including phones from four different Android phone manufacturers.

That said, the Android phones didn’t do well enough to earn a Readers’ Choice Award.

HTC shares the award with Apple. The companies received very similar satisfaction ratings in many areas, including overall satisfaction where both were rated 8.8.

Windows Phone-based HTC phones—represented by a single handset, the HTC Trophy—excelled in satisfaction with email (9.2).

PC Magazine also asked their readers why they chose the mobile phone that they did and their answers showed that platform choice is clearly driven by very different psychologies but again the Windows Phone OS is cited as the number one reason to pick that platform by a huge margin (78 percent).
