Qualcomm has started shipping baseband chips for Nokia and Samsung Electronics’s upcoming Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) smartphones with shipments kicking off in September.
Nokia, the world’s largest phone maker by volume, said on Friday it was increasingly confident its first Windows Phone would reach consumers this year.
Nokia spokesman Doug Dawson:
As we stated previously, we have increased confidence we will ship our first Windows Phone product this year.
Samsung has unveiled its first Mango-based smartphone, the Omnia W, which will first hit shelves in Italy at the end of October and then be available in other markets including Europe, Latin America, South East and South West Asia.
Qualcomm has initially used its ‘wafer bank’ built up previously and therefore, supply chain partners including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Kinsus Interconnect Technology actually expect little revenue contributions from the shipments.
